I have not studied photography in an academic setting, so have not got any planned-out projects for a portfolio. Instead, I have set out my photographs by theme, either subjects that have interested me or from attempting to recreate styles that I have seen other photographers employ.
Please use the carousels below to see some examples of my work.
Composition-Framing
The following images stem from an appreciation of the work of Max Rive. Like him, I tried to use foreground objects to frame the subjects and create layers to force the viewer to look deeper into the image.
Action Shots
I spent the last few months following my school's 1st XI football and 1st XV rugby teams through their respective leagues and tournaments and learnt a lot about the importance of different manual shutter speed and aperture settings when trying to capture fast moving action shots.
Wildlife
After regularly seeing this squirrel playing and exploring around the grounds of my school, I set out to photograph it. The shots required patience and the correct aperture to isolate the squirrel from the background. The rest of the images were taken in various zoos, and nature parks where I was able to improve my skills.
Cities at night - Bracketing images
These images were composed of a number of photographs taken in low light conditions that I then combined in Adobe Lightroom to bring out the best aspects of each shot on one final image. I learnt this bracketing strategy from a course I took with Edinburgh based photographer Richard Dyson.
In this image of St Paul's I have tried to combine the technique of bracketing exposures to increase the details with compositional layering and lead-in lines to both provide interest in the foreground whilst simultaneously drawing the viewers eye to a subject in the background.
Long exposure
These images show my experimentation with long exposure photography, with attempts made to add interest with movements during the exposure to blur and mist the backgrounds.
Publications
These images show a few of my pictures that have been used in our school magazine to accompany reports of school events.
